K-tech is the brand of the Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS), the Government of Karnataka body that runs the state's startup programmes. A K-tech recognised startup is one the state has recognised under its startup policy.
For founders in Bengaluru or anywhere else in Karnataka, recognition is how you get access to the state's startup support. If you're hiring a Karnataka startup, it's another official sign that the company is real and registered in the state.
What K-tech and the Karnataka Startup Cell do
KITS works under the Government of Karnataka's Department of Electronics, IT, BT and Science & Technology. Through the Karnataka Startup Cell, it recognises startups registered in the state and runs the Elevate grant programme. It also funds incubators and Centres of Excellence, and manages the incentives in the Karnataka Startup Policy.
The Karnataka Startup Policy
The Karnataka Startup Policy 2022–27 was introduced in December 2022. For recognised startups it reimburses some costs, including patent, marketing, GST and quality certification costs, and it offers incubation through sector-specific Centres of Excellence and technology business incubators.
The state reviews the policy from time to time, so check with the Karnataka Startup Cell for the version in force before you plan around a specific incentive.
MVP IN 2–3 WEEKSHave an idea? Get it live in 3 weeks.Get my fixed price →Elevate Karnataka
Elevate is the state's main grant programme for early-stage startups. Selected startups can get a one-time grant of up to ₹50 lakh to build prototypes, prove concepts and scale. Applications open in rounds.
Recognition and the Elevate grant are separate. Recognition makes a startup eligible for state support, while Elevate funding goes only to startups selected in a call.
What recognition says about a startup
Recognition tells you the company is registered and based in Karnataka, so you know where it actually operates, and that the state has accepted it as a startup under its policy. It also means the company is part of the Bengaluru network of incubators, mentors and Centres of Excellence.
Recognition doesn't certify the quality of the work. For that, look at what the team has shipped, ask for references, and see how clearly they scope and price what you need.
