DPIIT recognition is the Government of India's official recognition of a company as a startup. It's issued under the Startup India initiative by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), which is part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

For founders, recognition opens up a set of government benefits. If you're hiring a startup to build your product, it's a quick way to confirm you're dealing with a real, registered company.

What "DPIIT-recognised startup" means

A DPIIT-recognised startup is a private limited company, limited liability partnership or registered partnership firm that DPIIT has accepted as a startup under the Startup India programme. Recognition depends on the company's age and size. A current certificate says recognition is valid for up to ten years from incorporation, as long as turnover in any financial year hasn't gone above ₹200 crore.

The company also declares the industry and sector it works in. That part is self-certified, so it tells you what the company says it does and nothing about how well it does it.

What a DPIIT certificate shows

Each certificate carries a number that starts with "DIPP" followed by digits, the company's legal name and incorporation date, and the industry and sector it works in. It also shows the date of issue, the date it's valid until, and a QR code marked "Scan to Verify" that opens the official record.

DPIIT recognition benefits (for the startup)

The official Startup India kit lists these as the main benefits of recognition:

  1. Self-certification under several labour and environmental laws, which means fewer inspections in the early years.
  2. Faster examination of patent applications filed by the startup.
  3. Relaxed public procurement rules, so a young company can bid for government work without the usual prior turnover and experience requirements.
  4. Eligibility to apply for an income-tax exemption under Section 80-IAC for three consecutive years out of the first ten. This needs separate approval from the Inter-Ministerial Board, so recognition alone doesn't grant it.
  5. Access to government startup schemes and programmes run under Startup India.

Terms change from time to time, so check the current rules on startupindia.gov.in before you rely on any one benefit.

What it means if you're hiring a startup

DPIIT recognition doesn't certify quality. It does tell you that the company is real and registered, so you're signing with a legal entity rather than an individual, and contracts, invoices and IP assignment have a company behind them. It tells you the company is young and building something new, which is what the startup programme exists for. And you can check every claim on the certificate in under a minute.

Judge the work separately. Ask to see real screens, talk to a past client, and insist on a fixed scope with weekly demos.

How to verify a DPIIT-recognised startup

  1. Ask for the certificate, or for its number, which starts with DIPP.
  2. Scan the QR code on the certificate. It should open the official record with the same company name and dates.
  3. Check the company itself on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs portal. Our guide to the MCA company check shows how.
  4. Make sure the "valid until" date is still in the future.
